To što se čuvena, sremska planina Fruška gora ogleda u Dunavu i što je taj spoj prirodnih odlika još u III veku uočio car Probus i posadio vinovu lozu, prvi put izvan teritorije tadašnjeg Rimskog carstva, donelo je Sremu dugu tradiciju u proizvodnji vina, epitet  jednog od najpoznatijih vinskih regiona u Srbiji i armiju vinoljubaca koji samo zbog vina kreću put Srema. Ako tome dodamo poznate sremske gurmanluke i pikanterije, svinjokolje, guščijade, štrudle ,  kuglofe,.. teško je reći šta je u određenom trenutku presudilo dolasku. Jedno je sigurno, Mačkov Dani mladog Portugizera koji se održava  u Irigu, svakog trećeg četvrtka u novembru predstavljaju uvod u sve druge vinske svečanosti.

Portugizer, poznata autohtona sorta grožđa sa Fruške gore i pod istim imenom još poznatiji brend vinarije Mačkov podrum, već dugo je izazov kome nije odoleleo ni daleko i veliko tržište Amerike. Kod nas poznatiji kao svatovac, portugizer je tradicionalno piće svadbi koje su nekad u Sremu zakazivale u jesen, kad se završe radovi u polju i prispe novo mlado vino. Danas, Mačkov dan mladog portugizera predstavlja jednu od retkih tradicionalnih manifestacija koja je posvećena mladom  vinu, kroz poeziju, pesmu i degustaciju domaćinski točenenog mladog svatovca.

U slavu fruškogorskog vinogorja, u Sremu se praznuju i dani berbe grožđa, kada se gostima ponude i mnogi drugi sremski brendovi, od meda, kuglofa, domaćih mesnih prerađevina, do rukotvorina i naravno vina uz raznovrstan zabavno-muzički program. a najpoznatije su krajem avgusta Gastro Fest u Staroj Pazovi i u septembru: Karlovačka berba grožđa i u Irigu Pudarski dani i Berba Mačkovog portugizera . U Sremu ima oko 60 vinarija a jedan od načina da saznate čije vino je najbolje ocenjeno, posetite  krajem februara Dani vina u Rivici a početkom juna na Sremskoj kulenijadi u Erdeviku probajte i nabavite najbolji kulen. Biće to još jedan način da okusite delić sremske gastronomije i prilika da se zabavite.

The fact that the Danube River reflects the well-known mount Fruska Gora located in Srem and that this combination of natural features was noticed back in the 3rd century AD by the emperor Probus who planted the vine there, for the first time outside the Roman Empire, brought Srem a long tradition of wine making. It is also attributed as one of the best known wine regions in Serbia and an army of wine lovers decide to visit Srem only for its wine. If we add to that well-known specialities from Srem and its delicacies, pig slaughter, goose festivals, strudel, gugelhupf, etc. it is hard to say what the key reason for a visit is at a certain point. One thing’s for sure, Macak’s Day of Young Portugieser which is held in Irig every third Thursday in November represents the introduction to all the other wine festivals.

Portugieser, a well-known autochtonous grape variety from Fruska Gora, and the even better known brand of the same name by Mackov Podrum Winery, has been a challenge for a long time, even for a great and distant market of America. In this region better known as svatovac (wedding wine), portugieser is a traditional drink served at weddings that in Srem used to be celebrated in autumn, when work in the field was done and when there was new young wine. Today, Macak’s Day of Young Portugieser represents one of rare traditional events which is dedicated to young wine, along with poetry, songs and tasting of homemade young svatovac.

To honor the vineyards of Fruska Gora, there are wine festivals in Srem that celebrate the grape harvest, and guests are offered many other products from Srem as well, e.g. honey, gugelhupf, homemade meat products, art craft and of course wine. They are all accompanied with a variety of entertainment and music events. The best known festivals are held at the end of August- Gastro Fest in Stara Pazova and September- Karlovci Grape Harvest Festival, followed by Vineyard Guard Festival and Macak’s Portugieser Harvest in Irig. There are about 60 wineries in Srem and one of the ways to find out whose wine is the best rated is to visit Wine Days in Rivica at the end of February. If you want to try and buy the best kulen sausages, you can do it in Erdevik at the beginning of June at Srem Kulen Festival. It will be one more way to taste the dishes of Srem and a chance to have fun.
